The long history and rich culture of Naxos can be well appreciated in the museums of the island. There are many museums spread all over Naxos that present and preserve its cultural identity. Hereby we present you the four most important museums on Naxos.

The Archaeological Museum of Naxos: The museum is located at the central square of Chora, above Kastro neighbourhood. It is housed in a beautiful Venetian building which used to house the Jesuit School of Commerce in the 19th century. The Archaeological Museum was established in 1973. It has five floors and all of them have several exhibits. The most prominent exhibits include the collection from the Cycladic and the early Christian times. The archaeological collection consists of marble statues, golden pieces of jewelry, vessels, marble and clay pots, wooden tools and various funeral gifts found in ancient tombs.

The Venetian Museum in Chora: The museum lies at the northern gate of the magnificent Venetian Castle of Naxos. It is housed in a building that belongs to the Della Rocca family and is about 800 years old. The museum is run by the Della Rocca family today. A 40 minute guided tour is conducted, wherein the tourists get the opportunity to visit all the rooms of the museum: the reception hall, bedrooms, dining room, nursery, gallery, library, chapel, study and balcony. The balcony offers a splendid view of the Naxos Port and the Portara. At the end of the tour, the tourists are given time to see original paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photographs and jewelry from the time of the Venetian rule. Occasionally, musical concerts take place in the garden of the museum.

The Folklore Museum of Apiranthos: A Folklore Museum is located in the beautiful village of Apiranthos. The museum was founded in 1966 but it was reestablished in 1987. It is hosted in a house with three rooms. The most interesting exhibit of the museum is the krevataria, a complex specimen of weaving by the local woman. The other exhibits in the museum include various traditional musical instruments like doubaki and "tsabouna". You can also see different kitchen utensils, agricultural tools and local clothes.

The Geological Museum of Apiranthos: In Apiranthos village, you will find the Geological Museum of Naxos, located in the upper level of an elementary school. The museum was first established in 1967 but reopened in 1987. It was mainly established with the effort of Manolis Glezos, a famous Greek politician who was born in that village. A large number of the exhibits were donated to the museum by him. The Geological Museum of Apiranthos is one of the richest geological museums in Greece. It consists of various specimens of rocks from different parts of Greece, a beautiful collection of marble from Naxos and Paros, obsidian blades from Milos, volcanic material from Santorini and volcanic rock from Aetna and Vesuvious, Italy. The museum also comprises of different types of ores and meteoric pieces from different parts of the world. The most exciting exhibit is of course the fossil bones of the dwarf elephants, believed to live on Naxos about 70,000 years ago.
